What we do

Invisible fixes,
visible results

Paint & Prep is the invisible art of making VFX work look real. We remove everything that shouldn't be in the shot, repair damaged frames, and deliver pristine plates ready for compositing, colour grading, or final delivery.

Every frame is handled with hand-crafted precision — our artists use a blend of digital paint, clone tools, frequency separation, and AI-assisted infill to achieve seamless, undetectable results.

🪄
Wire & Rig Removal

Stunt harnesses, support wires, tracking markers, and lighting rigs — painted out frame by frame so nothing breaks the illusion.

🎨
Digital Paint & Touch-up

Blemish removal, tattoo hiding, continuity fixes, and object replacement. If it's in the frame, we can remove or change it.

🧹
Plate Clean-up & Restoration

Grain reduction, scratch removal, flicker correction, and damaged-frame repair to restore archive footage or fix on-set mishaps.

📋
Matte & Alpha Preparation

Pre-viz mattes, background extensions, and pre-keyed plate preparation delivered in the exact format your compositing pipeline requires.

Our Process

How Paint & Prep works

01
Shot Assessment

We review every frame, identify problem areas, and build a shot breakdown with estimated frame counts and complexity ratings.

02
Reference Capture

Clean plates, location stills, and on-set photography are gathered to rebuild obscured backgrounds accurately.

03
Digital Paint

Artists paint over unwanted elements using frame-accurate clone stamps, frequency separation, and AI-assisted infill.

04
QC & Review

Outputs are played at full speed and checked for temporal consistency, edge stepping, and motion smear before delivery.

05
Delivery

Clean EXR, DPX, ProRes, or DNxHD sequences — delivered to your pipeline spec with naming conventions and colour metadata intact.

Methods

Techniques we use

🖌️
Frame-by-frame Digital Paint

Traditional clone stamp, patch, and heal tools applied by hand on a drawing tablet — offering the greatest control for complex, moving subjects.

🔄
Patch Tracking

A clean section of background is tracked and warped to cover the problem area, following the camera motion automatically across the whole shot.

🤖
AI Infill (Generative)

Generative models reconstruct complex textures behind removed elements, then refined by hand to remove any artefacts.

📐
Frequency Separation

High-frequency detail and low-frequency tone are corrected independently — preserving texture while fixing colour or light inconsistencies.

🌀
Optical Flow Warping

Motion vectors from adjacent frames are used to warp background pixels into removed areas, creating seamless temporal consistency.

Flicker & Grain Correction

Temporal smoothing, grain matching, and de-flicker algorithms stabilise exposure and grain variance across long shot sequences.

FAQ

Common questions

Turnaround depends on shot complexity, wire count, and background detail. A simple single-wire shot in a static camera can be done in a few hours. Complex multi-wire shots with a moving camera and detailed backgrounds may take 1–2 days. We always provide a shot-by-shot estimate before starting.
We accept EXR, DPX, TIFF, ProRes (all variants), DNxHD/HR, and RAW formats from major camera manufacturers. We deliver in whichever format your pipeline requires — EXR and DPX sequences for VFX, ProRes or DNxHD for editorial, H.264/H.265 for reviews.
Yes — this is our most common request. We use planar tracking and camera solve data to accurately patch and track clean background elements across the full camera move. For complex parallax shots we may request a clean plate pass from production.
Absolutely. We work regularly with post houses on tight broadcast schedules and feature VFX pipelines. Overnight and weekend rushes are available at a rate premium, and we can scale team size to hit any locked delivery date.
VFX Paint Outsourcing helps you reduce production costs, meet tight deadlines, and access skilled digital paint artists without expanding your in-house team. It ensures high-quality wire removal, object cleanup, beauty retouching, and production-ready shots for films, TV, OTT, and commercials.
